Simutowe’s success embarrasses Govt.

Amon Simutowe’s achievement of the Grandmaster norm after his magnificent display at the Euwe Stimulans Invitational is an indictment on the Ministry of Sports and the government in general, former Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ), Deputy Secretary General, Edwin Simusamba has said.
In an interview, Simusamba said Simutowe’s performance was an indictment on government because they do not support the sport.
He said government was not part of Simutowe’s success because they had not supported him during all his games.
“The government should be embarrassed with the achievement of Simutowe, they do not support chess,” he said adding,
He said the government had concentrated on supporting other sports neglecting chess.
Simusamba observed that Simutomwe’s achievement should be a wake up call for the government to support other sports in the country.
“Simutowe’s achievement is not only good for the sport but the country at large,” he said.
He said Zambia had a lot of talented chess players as evidenced in their performance at the last All Africa games and the Olympics.
“We have a lot of talented chess players and that is why I want to appeal to government to start investing in chess,” he said.
Simutowe on Sunday crowned off his splendid show at the Euwe Stimulan Invitational after drawing with Grandmaster Didyendu Barua of India to move 7.5 points.
Simutowe, know in the chess world as the “Zambezi Shark” becomes the first black African to become Grandmaster and only the third in the World.
